NationMaster's Wikipedia Cobuyitaphobia?
The Cobuyitaphobia blog hasn't been updated much -- the last news was from August. Perhaps terrible synergies are making the news less (or I just don't care as much! : ).
Finally, though, something appropriate: I discovered from Wikipedia that NationMaster, an unethical online business, has been finding its own synergies with a free online encyclopedia:
NationMaster appears to use the content from Wikipedia along with commercial advertisements in an attempt to generate revenue. For example see [1] and [2]. Its encyclopedic articles are at times almost identical to Wikipedia, but the relationship between NationMaster and Wikipedia, if any, is unclear.
Not just that, the way NationMaster copied-and-pasted content may be illegal
Nationmaster.com seems to specify more restrictive terms than (and thus be incompatible with) the Gnu Free Document License (GFDL) of the original Wikipedia content.
Of course, to this I added my own story of Nation Master's cruelty:
Additionally, NationMaster has threatened lawsuits against websites that publish negative reviews of its services.

Cobuyitaphobia Protects Privacy?
One of the possibile synergies of Apple's switch to Intel was that Apple could use Intel's privacy-invading cpu-level user tracking firmware.
Fortunately, that's not going to happen.
Hurrah for cobuyitaphobia!

from the different-sides-of-the-story dept.
JWeinraub writes "OfB is reporting that, contrary to widely-published and discussed rumors, Apple is not including the controversial Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip in its Intel-based Macs. An anonymous registered Apple developer claims that the Apple x86 test boxes do not have DRM or TCPA components." From the article: "As to why those with access to the kits have been quiet concerning the claims, our source said, 'you can rest assured that Apple is keeping very close tabs on those of us who have them.' The kits are only available to those who accept a non-disclosure agreement."

Kasracer writes "Yesterday, The Register reported that HP separated from Apple's iPod selling agreement. 'Doing its best to erase Carly Fiorina's mistakes, HP has culled an iPod reselling agreement in place with Apple since January of 2004.' It is unclear whether or not HP will create an mp3 player or partner with another computer to fill the void."

Is Apple Suffering from Cobuyitaphobia on Intel Move?
| Apple's Colossal Disappointment? |
![]() |
from the more-a-blunder-than-anything-else dept.
Mudzy writes "Michael Roberson, founder of Linspire, has an article at The TechZone talking about Apple's 'Colossal Disappointment' for not porting Mac OS X to PC after they announced the move to Intel processors. He discuss why this could be a mistake." From the article: "Instead of a brilliant strategic maneuver, it's a step necessitated by IBM's inability to keep pace with Intel. It seems Apple was tired of losing the gigahertz competition to the PC world. Apple had been promising faster computers for some time and had not been able to deliver them. In addition, they were frustrated at IBM's inability to produce a fast low-powered chip for laptops."

More Apple-Intel Cobuyitaphobia (from Slashdot)
| Another Theory on Apple's Move To Intel |
![]() |
Posted by Zonk on Saturday July 16, @05:26PM
from the got-to-love-theories dept.
An anonymous reader writes "Why did Apple really switch to Intel? Larry Loeb thinks that it has everything to do with the Trusted Computing Group's TNC (Trusted Network Connect)." From the article: "The Trusted Computer Group is a multivendor association that grew out of Microsoft's pre-emptive Trusted Computing Platform effort. Microsoft realized it couldn't force this down the manufacturers' throats, so it formed the TCG to give it the veneer of respectability and 'open standards.'"

Linux Cobuyitaphobia
| Time for a Linux Consolidation? |
![]() |
from the mebbe dept.
An anonymous reader writes "Are there too many Linux distributions currently available? Can there be too many? This article explores the effect of the large number of distros out right now and suggests that progress could possibly be made through a consolidation. The article is more focused on Linux on the desktop but the ideas presented would impact the entire community, especially as it is seen as a rival to Windows." From the article: "One of the less widely recognized reasons why Linux has not yet toppled Windows, despite it many advantages, is how divided the resources available to Linux are. With dozen of different distributions the Linux community is so diffuse that the power or significance of any specific entity is severally limited."
